Easy and Elegant Entertaining – Part III Party Details

The final installation in our Easy and Elegant Entertaining series is all about the party details. We created a woodland-inspired themed dinner party and are sharing all of the details with you. One thing Furniture Row’s Regional Visual Merchandising Manager, Greg Utsinger, stresses is to not worry about things being perfect. “Don’t make things so complicated you can’t enjoy your own party.”

holiday_dinner_party_details

The Details:

1. Special invitations for guests offer a hint of the elegant evening to come.

2. A coordinating printed menu placed around each napkin adds a touch of sophistication. It’s the little details that can make an event more elegant,” Utsinger says.

3. Slightly spicy homemade Winter Bark made with white chocolate and cranberries is the perfect favor for guests to take home.

4. Place card holders made of tree limbs paired with silver accents tie the winter woodland theme together.

Holiday Cranberry Punch

Cranberry Punch [Official Recipe Here]:

  • 1 quart White Cranberry Juice
  • 2 cups Unsweetened Pineapple Juice
  • 2 tablespoons Almond Extract
  • 1 (2 liter) Ginger Ale
  • Frozen whole Cranberries for garnish

Combine all the ingredients in a punch bowl. Garnish with frozen cranberries.

double_fudge_layer_cake

Dessert: Double Fudge Layer Cake

An added touch of rosemary sprigs and cranberries around the cake’s base continues the woodland theme, according to Utsinger, who admits he helped put “easy” in easy elegance by making this dessert ahead of time. While he says the cake’s buttercream frosting can harden as it cools overnight in the refrigerator, “the great thing is that you can take it out and set it on your dessert table before the party begins, and by the time guests are ready for dessert, it’s perfect.”

How to Rock the Area Rug

This week, Sofa Mart is rocking the area rug. Looking for the perfect solution for adding that just-right touch of color and character to your room? With a few simple considerations, area rugs can help you create your own show-stopping space.

Area rugs provide color, comfort, warmth and an easy way to update a room. A bold rug can serve as a dramatic focal point in a neutrally decorated room. And, it can bring together your furniture and décor, creating a more coordinated space. Rugs also offer protection for your wood floors and carpet, especially those in high-traffic areas of your home.

Rugs can complement any room and lifestyle, but there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your next one.

Size Matters: Don’t try to cover every square inch of the floor with your new rug. Amy Foster, home accessory buyer for Furniture Row, says a good rule of thumb for dining rooms is to choose a rug that’s four feet larger than the overall length and width of your dining table. “For example, a 3′ x 6′ table should have a 7′ x 9′ rug or larger underneath to ensure chairs can move freely from the table without dropping off the back of the rug.” For living rooms, if your sofa or furniture backs up to a wall, the rug should be large enough to fit under the front legs of all pieces in the room. If your furniture floats in the middle of a large room, the rug should fit entirely under all pieces of furniture. “This creates a border to the space and gives the furniture grouping a defined location in the room,” Foster says.

Rockin' the Area Rug Looking for the perfect solution for adding that just-right touch of color and character to your room? With a few simple considerations, area rugs can help you create your own show-stopping space.

Choose Lifestyle-Friendly Fibers: When choosing a rug, keep in mind your lifestyle and the amount of traffic the space receives. Common choices for fibers include synthetic, natural and wool. Synthetic fibers are durable for high-traffic areas, and because they can easily be produced by machine, they are often a more affordable option, according to Foster. Natural fibers such as sisal, bamboo and jute are produced from plants and are quite durable, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. However, they are also quite absorbent, and water and cleaning liquids cannot be used on them. Wool rugs will last the longest and are naturally stain-resistant, which makes wool a good choice for homes with children and pets.

Looking for the perfect solution for adding that just-right touch of color and character to your room? With a few simple considerations, area rugs can help you create your own show-stopping space.

Two Might Be Better Than One: If you have a large room in your home, choose two rugs that complement each other to add cohesion and definition to the space. Also, you can use rugs to create natural boundaries, dividing a larger space, such as an open dining or living room, into two smaller sections by selecting different rugs and décor for the two areas of the room. Rugs can also help define the zones of a room based on tasks, such as a conversation area and a family room.

two_bedroom_rugs

Pick the Right Pattern: When choosing a pattern for your rug, think about your style, room and whether you want the rug to blend in or be a focal point. Rugs with neutral patterns offer a subtle foundation for the room and allow you to layer color and pattern in the accessories around it. Like the walls of a gallery, a neutral-patterned rug allows everything else in the room to become the focal point. However, a playful or bold rug pattern works well if the furniture in your room is solid or neutral. “A masterful way to coordinate colors is to pull out a secondary color from the rug onto furniture or wall color,” says Foster. “This gives instant coordination.” Conversely, Foster says a solid-color rug will complement and ground a room with a lot of pattern present in the furniture already. “Again, pull a secondary color from the existing patterns in the room for your rug selection,” says Foster.

Shop for Shapes: Rugs come in many different shapes, and the size and shape of your room should direct you in your rug choice. Try matching the rug with a key piece of furniture or the outline of the room. For example, if your dining room table is rectangular, choose a rectangle-shaped rug. This will keep the room looking cohesive and allow for a natural flow.

exotic_rugs_rolled

Pad Protection: It’s the big moment. You’ve done the research, made the decision, purchased the rug, brought it home — and now you realize you forgot a crucial item: the rug pad. A rug pad not only protects your floors and adds an extra layer of cushioning, it also helps your rug lie flat, saving you from slipping and making vacuuming much easier. It might seem like an extra step (and expense), but this one’s well worth it!

Easy and Elegant Entertaining – Part I Simple Stylish Gathering

Easy & Elegant Entertaining from Furniture Row: The wonder of the season’s first snowfall. The warm glow of a fire. A house full of laughter. And a mug full of cheer. May you thoroughly enjoy all the sights and sounds of this new season!

Easy_and_Elegant_Entertaining

When it comes to hosting an elegant party, Greg Utsinger, Regional Visual Merchandising Manager with Furniture Row, knows a thing or two. His love for entertaining, combined with a background as a trained pastry chef, is the perfect blend for creating the kind of elegant soirees his friends and family have come to love. “Many people think elegant means fancy, or even stuffy,” says Utsinger. ”But I think simple is often more elegant.” Like anyone, Utsinger admits he can get carried away with party planning, so he says it’s important to remind yourself to take a step back and focus on what you’re trying to accomplish, keeping things as simple as possible.

And he’s learned a few tricks along the way to do just that. A first step, he says, is choosing menu items you can make ahead of time so you have less to worry about on the day of the party and can focus on your guests. “No one wants to be stuck in the kitchen as guests are arriving,” says Utsinger.

Hosting Elegant Party

Another way to streamline your party planning is setting up courses in different areas of your home. For example, Utsinger says a dessert table could be placed in your family room, or maybe the fireplace is a perfect area to arrange appetizers and drinks. “Setting courses in different areas of your home alleviates the need to rush around, clearing plates for the next course,” he says.

Top 10 Veggies that Pack a Punch

Spend more time outdoors in your backyard garden, with Oak Express‘ new Outdoor Living Collection.

Top 10 Garden Veggies:

1. Kale- It’s a hearty and low-maintenance veggie and is packed with calcium, B6, magnesium, and vitamins A, C and K. Roast, sauté or slice small and eat raw.

2. Beets- These colorful plants offer a two-for-one value: their roots contain iron, potassium and vitamin C and are sweet when roasted; the leaves can be lightly cooked and added to other dishes. Harvest beets early; smaller beets are sweeter and more tender.

3. String Beans- Also low-maintenance and packed with vitamins A, B6, B1, C and foliates. Harvesting can be a fun activity for kids — especially if you plant purple or yellow beans.

4. Brussels Sprouts- When freshly picked, roast them in the oven (high heat) with olive oil and salt. They provide high levels of vitamins A, B6 and C.

5. Tomatoes- Delicious eaten warm-off -the-vine! Tomatoes contain fiber, iron, magnesium, niacin, potassium, the antioxidant lycopene and vitamins A, B6 and C.

6. Red Bell Peppers- One cup provides 317 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Eat raw slices, stir fry for fajitas or roast and save in the freezer  for pizzas or spaghetti sauce.

7. Carrots- Fresh carrots are sweet, crunchy and high in fiber, manganese, niacin, potassium and vitamins A, B6 and C. Like beets, they are most flavorful harvested small.

8. Broccoli- One cup of raw broccoli contains 130 percent of the recommended daily vitamin C. Avoid cabbage worm by covering plants with a row cover or lightweight bed sheets.

9. Peas- Delicious eaten straight from the vine or added to salads. They’re packed with fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium and vitamins A, B6 and C. Grow peas in early spring or late summer/early autumn as hot weather shuts down their production.

10. Onions- Onions are a kitchen staple and can be stored for months. They are high in vitamins C and B6 and also help reduce inflammation and boost immunity.

ALSO TRY:

A Potted Herb Garden. Whether on the countertop, porch or windowsill, an herb garden is easy to plant and maintain. Choose herbs that you already use in your cooking and enjoy the tasteful benefits of fresh herbs every day.
